One in every three women experiences gender-based inequality; be it in terms of harmful practices (such as, forced marriage, illiteracy, unemployment, domestic violence) or equality. These forms of violence are a major violation of the human rights. RightWalk believes that it’s time to re-set the balance - and this will start with education.
Education would enable girls and women to overcome child labour, other exploitative work and child marriage, and help them learn how to claim their social and economic rights. It would also help them make informed choices - and from a far better range of options. Educating girls would save lives and build stronger families, communities and economies
Furthermore, an educated female population increases a country's productivity. The global increase in female education can prevent more deaths, since a child born to a literate mother is 50% more likely to survive past the age of five.
However, what’s alarming, is the fact that 47.78 % ’out of school’ children are girls, who, in the next census would be calculated as illiterate women, which would then have a ripple effect on the education of their children.
Girls face so many obstacles to get into school. Sometimes it is simply because they are girls - often those from the poorest and rural backgrounds.
There are hundreds of reasons why girls should be in school and learning. The most obvious one is their basic human right to be able to learn, read, write and acquire skills needed to give them the best chance in life.
The world needs to know, that every girl deserves control over her future. Gender equality can be achieved and all women and girls can be empowered only through education, which will ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal rights in all fields and in leadership at all levels of decision-making. Education would also ensure decent work and equal pay for equal work, or work of equal value for all women, as well as preventing and eliminating all forms of discrimination, violence and harassment against women and girls in private and public spaces. And all of this can be achieved if RTE is implemented completely.
RightWalk uses RTE Act as a tool to make sure that no girl is left behind, in order to create a world in which every girl completes school. And when she’s finished, she’ll have the skills, knowledge and real opportunities to lead the life she chooses.
RightWalk Foundation’s Girl Child Scholarship Program aims to help girls complete primary educationby supporting them with Financial assiatance.
